GrandTouch™ keyboard
Yamaha's new keyboard action mechanism delivers a wide dynamic range and accurate response to every nuance of touch that puts a wide range of tones—from soft to loud—all at the pianist's fingertips. The highly consistent hammer of a grand piano replicates the pleasant response felt when the hammer strikes the strings, allowing for precise control of tone. Highly absorbent synthetic ivory white keys and black synthetic ebony keys prevent slipping of the fingers even during long playing sessions and feel like playing a grand piano.
The GrandTouch keyboard has wooden keys that demonstrate Yamaha's expertise in wood for pianos. As with a grand piano keyboard, solid wood is taken from the finest parts of well-dried wood, this will make the keys less prone to warping than keyboards made of laminated wood. The texture and structure of the wood keys creates a more grand piano-like feel.
Reveal your artistic expression
When playing a digital piano, the back area of the keys may prove to be a challenge for perfect musical expression. The reason for this is that the back of the key is closest to the fulcrum of the action. The closer the key you tap is to this pivot point, the less weight you gain and the more force you use. The longer GrandTouch's longer keys give the player MORE weight, allowing for greater expressive control, even on the back of the keys. This strut length is the same as that of the Yamaha S3X premium grand piano (as of July 2020), and is the longest strut used on any digital piano.
88-key Linear Graded Hammers—the first digital piano keyboard to feature realistic key weights
Each key on a grand piano keyboard has a different weight. This is because the strings for each note are slightly thinner and shorter in the treble register, and get thicker and longer towards the bass register. Clavinova's 88-key Linear Graded Hammers are the first in their class to accurately duplicate this graded touch with different weights and assigning key returns to each key. This instrument produces the astonishing feel and response of a grand piano, and allows players to get a true sense of a more authentic touch.
GP Response Damper Pedals
Using the damper pedal subtly changes the nature of the piano's sound and is essential to providing pianists with all the expressive tools necessary to convey their musical vision. Clavinova digital pianos feature a damper pedal that continuously detects the depth of depression and enables halfpedaling, which allows players to quickly adjust the pressure and release of the pedal, thereby changing the depth and character of their piano sound. The GP Response Damper Pedal offers a resistance curve like that of a grand piano, which produces a sound when touched and becomes more pronounced the deeper the pedal is depressed. This allows the player to get used to the subtle way of pressing the pedal.
Design philosophy
Clavinova pianos feature superior playing functionality and versatility, along with a sleek and authentic design, blending a compact form with modern aesthetics in a way that perfectly sets contemporary instrument standards for the piano. Central to the design concept of the Clavinova is how players feel when they sit at a Clavinova piano. Unnecessary elements are removed from the player's view to create a reassuring, natural space that feels like sitting at an acoustic piano. This shows Yamaha's consideration for players who practice on a Clavinova but perform on a grand piano—they will be able to control the stage without feeling tense or worried because everything feels the way it should. Clavinova pianos are part of the performer's everyday life—contemporary accents and a variety of colors are available to blend into any interior design or lifestyle.
