Aluminum: Clear, focused, and articulate, aluminum snare drums make excellent drum set centerpieces for pop and funk. They also tend to have a responsive feel, with quick rimshots that speak their piece and then get out of the way. Aluminum's naturally attenuated overtones make it a great choice for general studio work as well, since the drum is so easy to control.

Brass: We think every rock, metal, and gospel drummer should own at least one brass snare drum. Bright, fat, and loud, brass snare drums are the weapons of choice for performing drummers who want projection without sacrificing musicality. Brass also usually has a meaty stick feel that's satisfying to play.

Copper: Copper snare drums have a wonderfully dark, harmonically complex sound and a rounded attack that, in some respects, almost mimics wood. However, copper is still very present, and its ghost notes simply can't be beat. Blues, jazz, soul, and any other genre that requires both intricacy and warmth would benefit from having the drummer keep time on a copper snare drum.

Steel: Simply put, rimshots on a steel snare drum will cut through distorted guitar amps like nothing else. Its unabashedly aggressive sound and ringing overtones make it sound the most "metal" of the four materials, and its stick feel is also the stiffest. Steel requires a little more work to control said overtones, but give it some TLC, and it will shine.
