One-half Les Paul, one-half ES-295
The Les Paul first launched in 1952, but it wasn’t the only instrument that Les and his partner Mary Ford helped design for Gibson. Right around the same time, Les and Mary gave Gibson the idea to deck out their ES-175 model with a golden coat and fine floral patterns, resulting in the iconic ES-295 model that utterly revolutionized music forever in the hands of Elvis Presley’s guitarist, Scotty Moore.

Later down the line in 1958, it’s believed that Gibson treated Mary Ford to her first signature guitar — a gleaming Les Paul gold top, complete with those same floral patterns she helped inspire from the ES-295 on both the pickguard and the thoroughly non-standard armrest. In addition, the guitar featured cherry-colored back and sides rather than the all-gold appearance of a standard Les Paul. Gibson’s modern Mary Ford Les Paul Standard is their tribute to that very instrument, celebrating what’s arguably the second signature Les Paul in the brand’s history.
