Ramon 'Mongo' Santamaria was without a doubt one of the most inspiring conga players in the 1950's. With his band Black Cuban Diamonds, he created legendary songs such as Watermelon Man and albums like Summertime. Santamaria worked with a veritable plethora of musicians and percussionists, and he is known as one of the pioneers of modern latin-jazz music. Even after his death in 2003, his music still remains popular - which is why Meinl designed the MSA1212AWA tumba, out of respect for this grand master.

The 12.5-inch tumba features a deep, rich sound. Thanks to the large, two-play American white ash shell, the MSA1212AWA produces plenty of volume. Furthermore, the 10mm-thick lugs and buffalo hide drumhead provide plenty of punch. Even its looks reflect the personality of Ramon 'Mongo' Santamaria. The shell has a beautiful glossy natural finish which is nicely complemented by the gold-coloured hardware. This creates an elegant, timeless appeal that perfectly matches the legacy of the master percussionist.
